Abstract This White Paper reviews the history of Open Look and XView, summarizes the need to migrate XView-based applications to Motif, and discusses the ICS solution for this migration.
Introduction Sun Microsystems no longer ships the C header files required to recompile applications built with the XView GUI toolkit. As a result, developers maintaining legacy XView-based applications need to migrate their applications to the industry standard Motif toolkit to stay current with Sun’s latest hardware and software. To help make this migration quick and easy, ICS has developed a full service solution that combines proprietary tools with ICS' Motif expertise.
OPEN LOOK Sun developed OPEN LOOK prior to the industry standardization on Motif. Like Motif, OPEN LOOK is really the definition of a user interface look-and-feel. The first implementation of the OPEN LOOK look-and-feel was provided by the XView toolkit. Later, as the X Intrinsics library (Xt) developed by the X Consortium became popular, Sun developed OLIT, an implementation of OPEN LOOK based on Xt.
