Intelligent Ventilation

A breath of fresh air

Known for its innovative respiratory devices, including those for CPAP and home-care life-support ventilation, this medical device company turned to ICS to create an intuitive user interface for its latest product.

Medical Device Firm Gets Modern Interface for Ventilation Product

Looking to create the best user experience (UX) for one of its sophisticated ventilation devices still in the development phase, this medical device firm asked Integrated Computer Solutions, Inc. (ICS) for an assist. Why choose ICS? The code the customer planned to use as the foundation of the modern user interface (UI) was based on Qt, an ICS specialty, but the device-maker had only limited Qt experience. ICS is the largest independent source of Qt expertise in North America, offering both technical expertise and hands-on training.

Challenge

While using Qt for development is where ICS excels, restrictions placed on the new code made this project quite challenging. For instance, the customer’s platform did not support QML so Qt Widgets were the only option available to the development team. The existing UX design also presented a challenge. It was vague and many areas had been left undefined or were incorrectly defined. Plus, the design continually evolved as development progressed.

Further complicating matters, the existing code was written specifically for the UI developed for the company’s original product and couldn’t easily accommodate the more modern design requested from ICS.

Solution

To understand specifically what the customer was looking for in terms of UI design, ICS worked very closely with the manufacturer’s internal team, presenting prototypes and other mockups at multiple points during the development process. Through this iterative problem-solving approach, the customer was able to clearly express precisely what they were looking for in terms of the UI.

Result

Armed with detailed information on the customer's requirements and design preferences, the ICS team was equipped to execute effectively. As a result, ICS delivered a modern, easy-to-use touch interface for the lifesaving device, which the customer is now readying for market.
